About Us – Wings Out West
Wings Out West is located near Dubbo, NSW. The owner and Chief Flying Instructor, Dan Compton, founded the business based on a need for more flying training in the region.
The flight school run by Wings Out West specialises in Tailwheel, Bush flying, Low Level and Survival Flying. We offer flight training anyone from the beginner to more advanced students and pilots looking to improve upon their skills.
Wings Out West also assists people in buying and importing aircraft and is the South Pacific Dealer for American Legend Aircraft. Our facility is based on our own property and we have fuel, camping and L2 maintenance services available. International students are welcome.

Dan Compton – Wings Out West Owner
I decided I wanted to be a pilot at an age too young to remember. I started to fly at 16 at the Namoi Aero Club (Narrabri) and undertook many different jobs to earn enough money to finally become a Commercial Pilot 4 years later. The job market was lean so I went back to school and completed the HSC to be able to join the RAAF as a pilot. This plan worked, and I flew with the RAAF for 12 enjoyable years. I then fulfilled another dream and flew with the RFDS and I now reside on a farm near Dubbo dreaming of helping you start your journey, or better your experience, in aviation.
Dan is a thorough professional. His experience & qualifications are beyond question. His teaching style is considerate, astute and always with safety at the forefront.
I have the greatest admiration for him as an educator, as a pilot, as a mentor & as a person. He’s a true believer in the ideal of a pilot learning properly, without shortcuts yet still with a sense of fun & adventure. We need more Dans!
The best place to learn how to fly! Dan the instructor is easy going , super knowledgable , honest and has safety in the forefront of his mind. There hasn’t been a question I’ve been able to stump him on yet. The planes are in tip top condition near brand new and excellent for a beginner to learn on Location being 10km out of Dubbo makes it a no brainer.
